80211.net - Wireless and WiFi Networking, Products, Services, and Consulting

Who the heck is 80211.net L.L.C.?

80211.net L.L.C. is a privately held, leading provider of cost-effective wireless "Hotspot" services.  80211.net owns a network of Wi-Fi "hot spots," and is rapidly expanding with a growing base of wireless subscribers. 80211.net is based in the Salt Lake City, Utah area and has an US East Coast office in Tampa, Florida.

80211.net locations are growing from independent cafes and restaurants to include retail chains, hotels, business centers, resorts , apartment complexes, condominiums, and outdoor events and districts. 80211.net technology is based on the Open Source NoCat project, and enables companies and partners to offer their customers wireless access with complete user authentication, authorization, and accounting.  Customers are able to use any 80211.net location with complete roaming between locations.  For a list of our current locations, please visit our Hotspot Location page.

80211.net differentiates itself from other hot spot providers by offering extremely inexpensive access, combined with inexpensive partnering opportunities.  Any location that already has high-speed Internet Access, or obtains such access, can become an 80211.net Hotspot with minimal effort and cost.  We are on the verge of allowing anyone to join into our network, and providing a complete revenue sharing model.  Stay tuned!

80211.net also provides "On-Demand" Hotspots for events or conferences.

I have to admit that I wasn't sure when we would actually get to this point.  This entire project is the evolution of a lot of ideas and conversations over the last 10+ years, and now the actions of a couple of key individuals.  Eventually this page may even contain a lot of names of the folks who assisted in brainstorming and "dreaming" about the future.  We are now committed to "creating the future" ... not merely sitting back and waiting for others to generate the future.

80211.net is an early stage start-up company that is dedicated to providing low-cost, high-speed Internet Access. We are building out our wireless services, and now are offering wireless products.  With what we have learned we are also offering consulting services to WISPs.

I can say that I am driven by my desire to be connected all the time, everywhere that I go.  I am doing advanced research and experimentation in wearable computers, location-based services and augmented reality applications.

80211.net started with two core individuals (along with a number of part-time supporting people)

  • Scott C. Lemon - Partner, Visionary, Wireless Pioneer, Developer
  • John Pugh - Partner, Project Manager and Wireless/Systems Expert

 Where did it all begin?

First 80211.net Location Opens!

On February 5th, 2002 the first 80211.net location came on-line!  We turned up our services at the Mestizo Gallery and Cafe, located at 511 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.  As an Olympic special, we offered free access for laptop owners (802.11b Wireless and Wired Ethernet) for the first several months.

Who is 80211.net?
Since 1996 our research team has been working with wireless networks, and even early implementations of 802.11 networks. We began with the earliest Xircom 1Mb wireless PCMCIA cards in 1995, and worked closely with NetWave Wireless (the Xircom spin-off) as they developed and released their 2MB solutions.

In 1998, we created the largest wireless-enabled conference ever held on earth at that time.  At Novell's Brainshare Conference in Salt Lake City, we installed 2Mb 802.11 access points from NetWave Wireless throughout the Salt Palace convention center, covering a five city block area. 750 attendees were able to get wireless access to the Internet for simply a credit card deposit. This was the beginning of what we saw for the future.  This is when we registered this domain name!

Since this event, we have been slowly developing an evolving an architecture and business model for the creation of a global wireless network ... completely built by anyone that would like to participate. We have been through three generations of this project now, and are about to deploy the fourth generation architecture ... and it will be coming here soon.  We are now beginning our first deployments here in the Salt Lake City area, and will be opening our network to anyone that wants to join ... and make money.

Now that "community networks" are beginning to get some attention, we are committed that this is the right time to deploy our creation ...

Stay tuned and check back ... we just added some new mail lists on our Support page!  Please feel free to subscribe to these, or just drop an e-mail to us here!
